How to convert an AVIF

Questions about converting AVIF
No, and the reason is worth stating plainly: browsers decode AVIF universally but none of the major ones can write it from a canvas yet. Asking one to produces a PNG with no warning, so AVIF is not offered as an output at all — we would rather leave it off the menu than hand you a PNG with an .avif name on it. Reading AVIF and converting it to WebP, PNG, JPG, GIF, TIFF, BMP or ICO all work here.
AVIF wraps still images in the AV1 video codec, which uses far more sophisticated prediction and transforms than JPG's decades-old design. For the same visual quality it commonly lands 30-50% below JPG, and it also supports transparency and high dynamic range, neither of which JPG can do.
Yes, a little, unavoidably: you are decoding one lossy format and re-encoding into another, so a second round of compression is applied — WebP at quality 85, JPG at 90. It is rarely visible, but if the image matters, convert to PNG instead and accept the larger file.
